Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are recognized as one of the most useful materials in bio-separation because of simple and facile separation process by magnetic field. Especially, preparation of multifunctional nanocomposites by assembling iron oxide NPs with other functional NPs such as quantum dots (QDs) is promising for development of new separation tools. Herein, QDs-embedded iron oxide-silica NPs (Fe2O3@SiO2@QDs NPs), which have both magnetic and fluorescent properties were prepared. The Fe2O3@SiO2@QDs NPs have magnetic NP at the core of silica backbone, and hundred units of QDs at the silica surface. The cells containing these NPs can be separated by magnetic field, while traced optically by fluorescent signal from the NPs. Moreover, the cells can be separated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) system. We demonstrate that these multifunctional NPs have a great potential in cell-separation. |
