Recently, many researchers are interested in the desalination of sea water with the minimum energy usage. Especially, forward osmosis(FO) is recognized as a future desalination opinion although it is currently used only in limited area. The key benefit of FO system is requiring a relatively low amount of energy. The water penetration through FO membrane is mainly derived by osmosis pressure. But, in most FO systems, purified water was obtained with draw solutes since the FO membranes need a draw solution which provides an osmotic force. Therefore, on these systems must have another separation process for pure water recovery. Our research is focused on directly gaining pure water from the FO membrane. We used poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel which is a thermally sensitive polymer, having a critical volume transition at 32 ℃. Repeating temperature change from 5 to 50 ℃, we could make pure water continuously. With changing the primary variables, we measured water fluxes. Our experiment can open up a new possibility of FO technology with efficiency. |
