In our previous studies, we designed and synthesized new fluoropolymers, poly[oxy[[2-(perfluoroalkyl)ethyl]sulfonylmethyl]ethylene]s, which contains hydrophilic oxyethylene backbone, hydrophilic sulfone spacers, and hydrophobic fluoroalkyl side groups. These polymers show very low surface energies evaluated by contact angle measurement (equation of state theory). To study the relationship between side chain length and structure of these polymers, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy measurements were used. It was confirmed that these polymer surfaces are covered with well ordered layers, consisting of side chain groups whose average tilt angle with the surface normal lies in the range 29-49°. We also found that side chain length have a profound effect on the molecular aggregation state and surface properties of these fluoropolymers. |
