Unlike traditional approaches, immunotherapy harnesses a patient's innate and adaptive immune system to treat disease. Recent clinical data support the utility f this treatment modality, making immune modulation an emerging technology in medicine and biomedical field. Accordingly, recently, research to identify new immunological underlying mechanisms is being actively conducted, and related new immunomodulatory drugs are being actively tested or used in patients. Biomaterials and drug delivery approaches have been actively combined with immunomodulatory techniques to improve the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy compared to conventional systemic administration. In this talk, we will discuss biomaterial-based approaches to deliver immunomodulatory compounds in a spatiotemporal controlled manner to combat a variety of severe diseases, including sepsis and cancer. |
