Synthesis and Self-assembly of Well-defined Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Brushes via Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) |

Well-defined block copolymer brushes attract recent attention because of their unusual conformation and chain dimension. Ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene containing polymeric pendants offers fast kinetics upon synthesis of polymer brushes. We synthesized diblock copolymer brushes containing poly(ethylene glycol)s and polystyrenes as brushes tethered to the polynorbornene backbone. Fast initiating Grubbs’ 3rd generation catalyst ensured the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer brushes with desired molecular weights and block ratios. We investigated the self-assembly of these block copolymer brushes in solution. The well-defined block copolymer brushes were also used as dopants for block copolymer bilayers, which might alter the curvature of the bilayer. When embedded in the bilayer, the block copolymer brush might behave as membrane proteins due to its large chain dimension compared to conventional bilayer-forming block copolymers. |
