In recent years, bio-diesel has been considered as one of the next generation bio-fuels. It is also well known that a large amount of glycerol is being produced as a by-product of bio-diesel during its formation from vegetable oils. It is a hot issue to find an application of the glycerol, and one of the good ways for its use is to prepare glycerol carbonate(GC) from it. On the basis of this, polymers based on the GC were synthesized by the ring opening polymerization, using deprotonated TMP as a catalyst. In this study, mechanisms of the polymerization of GC, for the formation of the polymers with molecular weight of around 1000g/mol, was studied, changing monomer feeding rates, reaction temperatures and reaction times. The molecular weights and the chemical structures of the poly(glycerol carbonate) prepared were characterized, using GPC, 1H NMR, FT-IR. |
