CdS nanoparticles sensitization of H2 and NH3 treated ZnO nanorods film as photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting |

We report the demonstration of hydrogen and ammonia treatment as a simple and effective strategy to improve the performance of ZnO and CdS-sensitized ZnO nanorod for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Hydrogen and ammoniac-treated ZnO (N/H:ZnO) nanorods were prepared by annealing the pristine ZnO nanorods in pure hydrogen atmosphere at 350 oC for 60 min following annealing with different length of ZnO nanorods the for optimal condition observation. In comparison to pristine ZnO nanorods, N/H:ZnO samples show enhanced photocurrent in the entire potential window. To enhance the absorption in the visible light region, N/H:ZnO nanorods were sensitized by cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles. The optimal condition of the CdS deposition time of CdS was 30 min. The CdS-sensitized N/H:ZnO nanorod film with exhibited significantly improved PEC property after treatment in Ar atmosphere at 400 oC for 2h. The optimized CdS-sensitized N/H:ZnO nanorod sample yields a photocurrent density of ∼7 mA/cm2 at -0.73 V vs Ag/AgCl, in 0.5 M Na2S solution under the illumination of simulated solar light (100 mW/cm2 from 150 W xenon Arc lamp source coupled with an AM 1.5G Air Mass filter). This photocurrent density corresponds to a solar-to hydrogen (STH) efficiency of ∼4.5%. The morphology and properties of samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS and conductance measurement. The H2 gas generation using this optimal CdS-sensitized N/H:ZnO nanorods structure was obtained with 6 ml/cm2 in 1 hour. |
