Since phosgene or its derivatives are widely used in the conventional process to synthesize isocyanate compounds for the manufacture of polyurethanes, non-phosgene synthesis routes have been reported due to toxic feedstock handling and corrosive HCl formation. Among many methods, the two-step routes via carbamates have been reported to be very promising, where the second step is the thermal decomposition of carbamates. However, this reaction has serious limitation caused by high reactivity of isocyanates. Therefore, the development of highly efficient catalysts should be conducted in order to minimize side reactions and, hence, enhance the isocyanate yield. For this purpose, heterogeneous catalysts have been studied in this work. Among a number of catalysts, ZnO was found to show the superior catalytic performance. |
