Sulfonated Poly(αMeSt-IB-αMeSt) Triblock Copolymers for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell |

Sulfonated poly(αMeSt-IB-αMeSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential living cationic polymerization followed by the reaction with acetyl sulphate for sulfonation of alpha methyl styrene blocks for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell applications. Obtained series of the sulfonated triblock copolymers were then characterized the compositions and the molecular weight by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy and GPC respectively. These block copolymers were increasingly swollen water as the sulfonation level increased. The morphologies of the sulfonated triblock copolymers by SAXS and AFM were well defined cylinder or lamella structures. Water swollen sulfonated triblock polymers with cylinder structures showed water retardation at 100°C for 120 min, which was probably due to capillary condensation of water vapour into small cylinder ionic channels of sulfonated poly(αMeSt) blocks in polyisobutylene domains. |
