Electrospun polymer nanofibers have exhibited an abrupt increase in mechanical strength with decreasing their size. In this study, crystal structure of the electrospun Nylon 6 nanofibers (NFs) is discussed to identify the size-dependent behaviors of nanofibers. The size and shape of NFs is observed by Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). XRD results show that the conformation of crystalline chains is transformed from pleated structure to the highly extended structure with decreasing diameter from 370 to 70 nm. The crystalline chains in the inner layer of NFs become highly packed with decreasing diameter from 370 to 120 nm, whereas the crystalline chains on the NFs surface is relatively less packed. In a further diameter decrease from 120 to 70 nm, even the crystals on the surface of NFs possess highly packed chain conformation. This results suggest that chains are highly stretched when diameter of NFs decreases. |
