Acrylonitrile-based precursors have a variety of advantages in aspect of cost-effectiveness and processing efficiency during the manufacturing process of carbon fibers. In this study, we have synthesized a series of terpolymers with various compositions of acrylonitrile (AN), methyl acrylate (MA), and itaconic acid (IA) by using aqueous suspension polymerization in the presence of redox initiator. Molecular structure and cyclization-based stabilization of AN/MA/IA-based terpolymers were investigated by using NMR, DSC and TGA. The reactivity ratios were estimated with the Mayo-Lewis equation by 1H NMR to better define composition of terpolymers. Minor quantities of IA (<3%) boosted the cyclization in the terpolymers via an ionic mechanism. However, MA comonomer retarded the cyclization owing to its disruption of the AN sequence, although it contributes to enhance the chain mobility of the terpolymers. |
