Effect of co-solvents on the performance of Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC) |

A strip of ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) is an electroactive material with a great potential applications such as actuators, sensors and catheters. We investigate the organic solvent effects of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol and their mixture with water on the properties of membrane like swelling properties, solvent uptake and on the interfacial area between electrode and polymer electrolyte. In a process of the chemically plated electrode, mass transport of water and their mixture solvent through a nafion membrane as a function of the number of the plating and the ratio of mixture was measured. The better improved electrode induced a better bending performance of actuator such as bending displacement, response rate and force. The morphology of the IPMC was characterized by FE-SEM. Displacement, force and response rate were measured by a displacement measuring system. |
