Recently, interest in monodisperse -conjugated oligomers has dramatically expanded due to their electro-optical properties and the advances in synthetic methods such as metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Among them, fluorene oligomers have been considered as one of the most important model compounds since the corresponding polymers, polyfluorenes (PFs), show very attractive features such as very high photoluminescence and electroluminescence, high quantum yield, good thermal and oxidative stability, good solubility. In this work, novel end-group functionalized fluorene oligomers were investigated. Interestingly, the oligomers having dimethylsiloxane end-groups exhibited unique liquid crystalline phases, which are characterized to be layered smectic A and C liquid crystalline phases, and these smectic phases show the homeotropic alignment. |
