Cokes wastewater contains high concentration of toxic pollutants such as phenols, thiocyanate, ammonia and cyanide. Among these toxic pollutants, free cyanide is a highly toxic one, which may cause severe problems for nitrification and denitrification process to treat cokes wastewater. In this study, therefore we investigated free cyanide inhibition on both process in a batch and continuous reactor system. In the first batch test, free cyanide above 0.1 mg/L inhibited nitrification, however after long exposure to free cyanide by successive batch test, threshold concentration decreased to 0.04 mg/L. Similarly to inhibitory effect on nitrification, threshold concentration on denitrification also decreased from 1.0 mg/L to 0.5 mg/L. Meanwhile, shocking loading to the continuous reactor with 10 mg/L CN- resulted in a significant inhibition of the nitrification process and nitrite accumulation occurred as a CN- loading increased, whereas the denitrification process was severely inhibited at free cyanide loading of 20 mg/L. |
