Chemical Modification of C60 with Various Functional Groups via Destructive Electrophilic Substitution Reaction |

4-aminobenzoic acid, 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)benzoic acid and 4-fluorobenzoic acid were reacted with C60 to afford functionalized C60 in PPA/P2O5. MALDI-TOF-MS spectra was used to identify the adducts and provided strong evidence of its chemical modification via proposed destructive electrophilic substitution reaction. The reaction progress and covalent attachment were further assured by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-absorption spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). To our knowledge, we have demonstrated for the first time that Friedel-Crafts acylation in PPA is a viable, alternative route to effective functionalization of C60. It is envisioned that the presence of versatile carbonyl functions on the C60 will allow further development of application-specific derivatization chemistry to generate interesting C60-based materials. |
