Functionalization of polyolefins with monomers containing carboxylic groups such as maleic anhydride (MAH) has been intensively investigated in order to improve their physical and chemical properties. The introduction of succinic groups in ethylene-propylene-diene rubbers is a useful method to improve their adhesion characteristrics, and it is a step towards producing new materials specially designed for applications in which unmodified hydrocarbon rubbers exhibit poor performance. Even if EPDM is an attractive rubber material, its application is frequently limited because of its intrinsic nonpolarity. As a result, grafting of polar monomer to EPDM can expand the its application. Here, we investigated detailed graft reaction of EPDM with MAH and other acrylate monomers.
