In this study, we synthesize semiconducting snowman-like particles, each of which has a core-shell structure with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) core and polyaniline (PANI) shell. Cross-linked PMMA particles are prepared initially via dispersion polymerization, and then monodispersed snowman-like PMMA particles were fabricated in a seed emulsion polymerization procedure by swelling the PMMA particles with monomer solution. After being coated by semiconducting PANI layer, the particles become electroresponsive with the ability of connecting to each other to form chains over a parallel electrodes. These core-shell particles based electrorheological (ER) fluid was tested by a rotational rheometer and showed unusual ER properties at various electric field strengths. The flow curves were analyzed by Cho-Choi-Jhon model. As supporting data for the ER effect, dielectric spectra of the ER fluid were measured by the LCR meter, which presented a very short relaxation time. |
