Electrochromic devices (ECDs) exhibits color change reversibly on applying an external potential. Viologen derivatives were frequently employed as an electrochromic material in ECDs owing to their simple molecular structure and simple synthetic modification. However, viologens have often suffered from significant drawbacks, such as inferior coloration efficiency, low switching speed, and reduced long-term stability. As for electrodes, there have been various attempts for transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) were investigated. As a measure to effectively address these issues, here we present the use of octa-hexyl viologen substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane as an electrochromic material. The TCE compositions were prepared by the mixture of silver nanowire and PEDOT:PSS and then spray-coated on the plastic substrate. The electrochromic performances of the plastic ECDs were investigated in terms of cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry, and kinetic stability. |
