Selective photocyclic aromatization (SCAT) of a cis–cisoid helical poly(phenylacetylene) derivative containing an extended π-conjugated biphenyl group in the side chain was investigated during the in situ photodegradation in a film. An infrared absorption peak appeared at ~1700 cm−1 owing to the overtone vibration of the 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene, while the intensity of the peak at 1060 cm−1 owing to the cis C=C bending of the main chain decreased. Simultaneously, the polymer film became highly emissive in the green-light region, while it was originally almost nonemissive. The FL quantum yields in the film and solution were almost 0.92% and 1.3%, respectively. The FL lifetime of the polymer film increased with photodegradation. The results indicate the occurrence of excimer emission because of in situ SCAT in the film. A finely resolved FL image pattern was obtained using an appropriate photomask. |
