Alkaline water electrolysis is one of the simplest and most efficient method for hydrogen production. For the last decades, asbestos has served well as a separator for industrial alkaline water electrolysis, however, it has recently been withdrawn from commercial use due to toxicity and serious health hazards. Asbestos also causes large crossover of the gas, resulting in low purity hydrogen. In this study, a thin-film composite membranes with crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) layer for alkaline water electrolysis were fabricated by an ultra-spray coating process. The prepared membranes were characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, and TGA techniques. Furthermore, electrolysis performance of thin-film composite membrane was studied in alkaline water electrolysis test conditions by the specific areal resistance, gas permeation differential pressure, and alkali resistance. |
