Aluminum coated fibers (ACF) are attractive alternative to metals, alloys and conducting polymers for EMI shielding because of its light weight, dimensional flexibility, high specific strength, high aspect ratio, excellent resistance to corrosion, and can act best electrically conductive materials. In the present study, modification of aluminum coated glass fibers (ACF) was carried out by grafting hydroxybenzoic acid and aminopropyltriethoxysilane on its surface. Successful grafting of active functional groups on ACF surface was characterized using various tools such as FTIR, XRD, XPS, TGA and FE-SEM. Modified fibers were then incorporated in epoxy matrix at various loading amount and characterized for its EMI shielding effectiveness properties (EMI SE). Epoxy composites loaded with 30 wt. % loading of modified fibers showed higher EMI SE at 1.0 GHz, when compared to pristine ACF filled system. |
