Au(I)–SRs were synthesized very easily by mixing HAuCl4 and n-alkanethiols. Au(I)–SRs have highly ordered polymeric supramolecular structures, and the ordering increased as the length of the alkyl group increased. The highly ordered supramolecular structures of Au(I)–SRs were a key factor for the aurophilic effect, which in turn generated the luminescent property. DSC analysis indicated that Au(I)-SRs were subjected to irreversible transitions below the thermal decomposition temperature in the first heating scan, while new reversible transitions were observed from the second heating scan. We found that reduction of Au(I)-SRs to gold nanoparticles stabilized by n-alkanethiolate occurs during this endothermic irreversible transition. |
