For the fabrication of a directional heat dissipating material, triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC) monomers were synthesized. The heat transfer performance of DLC network is strongly affected by the molecular organizations on a macroscopic length scale. The uniaxially oriented DLC network can be obtained using a strong magnetic field. The uniaxially aligned DLC film for which the DLC columnar axis is along the transverse direction of the film plane displays a better heat conduction performance. Because of the good interfacial affinity between aromatic DLC cores and of carbon-based thermal conducting fillers which has polyaromatic structures, DLC heat dissipating materials are expected to apply as polymeric matrices in the carbon-based heat transfer composites.
