Visible-light-induced Viral Inactivation by C60 Immobilized on Steel Mesh: Enhanced Remote Oxidation by Singlet Oxygen as a Long-lived Oxidant |

In this study, we demonstrated the potential application of C60 immobilized on the steel mesh for the remote inactivation of MS-2 bacteriophage under visible light irradiation. To explore the possibility that C60 is capable of remote inactivation under visible light irradiation, we monitored the rate of MS-2 phage inactivation on the culture plates that were spaced at a fixed distance (5 - 30 cm away from a photoreactor) over the course of photo-excitation of C60 with visible light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We observed the noticeable inactivation of MS-2 phage even on the plate 30 cm away from the reactor, which was in marked contrast to the experimental results obtained using TiO2-coated mesh (excited with UV LEDs) on which hydroxyl radical serves as a main oxidant: no MS-2 phage decay on all plates. The remote inactivation likely results from the long distance diffusion of singlet oxygen associated with its relative long life-time. |
