This study examined the carbonate formation by CO2 at 350 oC of low surface area magnesium oxide-based sorbent with eutectic nitrate salt. The eutectic nitrate salt was embedded into the synthesized MgO and the CO2 sorption performance of the modified sorbent was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, in situ XRD of the modified sorbent was conducted to realize the interaction of CO2 gas molecules, eutectic melt and solid MgO during carbonation. The results showed that the phase transition favored the absorption of CO2 and the presence of a stable melt up to 500 oC promoted the high CO2 capacity and regenerability of the new sorbent.
