Ionic liquids (ILs), which are defined as a pure salt with a melting temperature below 100 °C, are attractive materials because of their intriguing fundamental chemistry on molecular dynamics and useful properties in industrial applications such for ion conductors, solvents, and electrolytes. Therefore, new ILs have been explored vigorously. In the presentation, we will show the POSS filler for modulating thermal properties of ILs. We found octa-substituted POSS has significant effect for decreasing melting temperature without loss of thermal stability. From the thermodynamic study on the melting process, it was suggested that the thermal characteristics originated from the structural features of POSS such as decreasing of fusion enthalpies and entropies could be transmitted to surrounding ionic pairs. We explain the crucial role of function groups for expressing POSS effect on melting temperatures. |
