In this study, porous polyethylene membranes filled with crosslinked aminated polychloromethylstyrene (CMPS-PE-I) and sulfonated polystyrene (PS-PE-S) were synthesized via-pore filling polymerization and subsequent chemical modification. CMPS-PE-I and PS-PE-S membranes exhibited less water uptake (8-10%), higher ion-exchange capacity (IEC) (2.8-3.2 meq/g) and lower electrical resistance (0.3-0.7 Ω.cm2) than currently available commercial membranes. The synthesized membranes-based membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cells exhibited performances, similar to those of commercial membranes. |
