In this study, MWNTs were decorated with PLA via “grafting from” method with the goal of combining their unique physical and chemical characteristics of the MWNTs with the light-weight and biodegradability of PLA. Firstly, pristine MWNTs were modified to possess -OH groups by KOH treatment to give MWNT-OH. Afterwards, L-lactic acid was polymerized onto hydroxyl groups functionalized MWNTs using surface initiated polymerization technique. The obtained PLA-grafted MWNTs were characterized with FT-IR, SEM, and TGA, and blended with a neat PLA to produce biocompatible carbon nanocomposites. Compared to pristine MWNTs, the solubilization of the MWNT-OH and PLA-g-MWNT was greatly improved. The colloidal solutions of the MWNT-OH and MWNT-PLA were found to be homogeneous and relatively stable even for 1 month. The mechanical properties of the prepared MWNT/PLA and MWNT/bioepoxy/PLA biocomposites were also investigated by universal tensile machine and dynamic mechanical analysis. |
