Biomass liquefaction in hydrothermal and solvothermal condition can offer environmentally benign and effective reaction conditions for the production of biofuels and biochemicals owing to the unique physical properties, including low viscosity, fast diffusion, zero surface tension, tunable physical properties, and high reactivity of the solvent used. The bio-oil produced from hydrothermal and solvothermal condition exhibits high calorific values and high stability, which is suitable to be directly used as a combustion fuel. Herein, liquefaction of various types of biomass (wood, macroalgae, lignin) in supercritical alcohol is discussed in detail. The importance of liquid product separation after the liquefaction is covered. |
