In the present work, we have tried to prepare styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites that montmorillonites (MMT) are well dispersed with nano-scale in SBR. SBR nanocomposites were prepared from both pristine MMT and organically modified MMT, and modified polybutadiene as a compatibilizer. To enhance the dispersion properties of MMT in SBR, polybutadiene was modified with dimethyl alkylamine substituted tetramethyl siloxane, and the master batches of those were prepared by a solution process. SBR nanocomposites could be prepared by a melt-compounding followed by a hot-press vulcanization. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the interlayer distances of MMT were increased and the nanocomposites had the intercalated and exfoliated structures of MMT by the nanocomposition of SBR with the master batch. Mechanical and dispersion properties of the nanocomposites from the master batch are superior to those of nanocomposites without master batch. |
