The membrane technology has experienced an unprecedented market growth in the past few decades, driven by continuous improvements in membrane fabrication, module standardization, and process optimization. The key element in the membrane technology is the membrane itself, and polymeric membranes dominate the current market. To maximize the membrane performance, it is necessary to fine-tune the membrane morphology in terms of pore size distribution, pore connectivity, and structure rigidity. Among the membrane fabrication techniques, phase inversion method is the dominant route. By controlling the thermodynamic state of the polymer solution and kinetics of the phase inversion, it is possible to fine tune the membrane morphology and thus performance. In this presentation, an overview of controlling the membrane morphology via phase inversion method will be discussed from thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives. |
