2-D single colloidal crystal was prepared by rubbing the powder. The periodic structure of the crystal produced entire visible range of vivid iridescence colors. The colors were predictable by the grating equation. Therefore, a single colloid crystal was also able to produce different colors by tilting or rotating. When rubbed along different directions, the colloids were assembled into different orientations and generated other colors. This color-tuning capability offers a new strategy for fine-art painting --“photonic crystal painting”. This simple and fast technique to color generation from colloid crystal was used to demonstrate a curved surface deposition. Moreover, colloid crystal on concave array worked like nature mimicking. Rubbing powder on a substrate with a micropattern in adhesion energy resulted in a patterned monolayer of the particles sharing the same crystal orientation repeat. |
