The di- and triblock copolymers of PNIPAM-b-LCnP (with LCnP as the hydrophobic and PNIPAM as the hydrophilic block) and LCnP-b-PNIPAM-b-LCnP (n = 3, 6, 11, LCnP = poly(n-4-cyanobiphenyl-4’oxy)(CH2)n acrylate), PNIPAM = poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)) were synthesized by using Reversible Addition Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization method with low poly dispersity indices. The optical properties and micellar structures in aqueous medium were studied using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), generalized indirect Fourier transform, TEM, AFM and light scattering methods for a model-study on self-assembled hydrogels. Lattice dimensions of self-assembled photonic crystals in the bulk and in micelle could be controlled by changing temperature due to swelling of the PNIPAM block having LCST (32℃ - 34℃). This property can be applied to displays, sensors and tunable photonic band-gaps. |
