Silica-filled PDMS composite membranes were prepared by adding silica particles into PDMS solution. Incorporation of silica particles into a polymer matrix increased permeability and selectivity of the membranes. When the silica particles were employed into PDMS matrix without any treatment, silica particles were agglomerated with each other and concentrated at the top of the membrane surface. For uniform distribution of silica particles in PDMS matrix, the surface of silica particles was modified using silane coupling agent. The bonding between the silane coupling agent and the silica particles changed the hydrophilic silica surface into a hydrophobic surface. Therefore, it could reduce the filler-filler interaction and improve the dispersion of silica particles in PDMS matrix. We investigated the effects of type and composition of silane coupling agent on membrane performances. Surface modification of silica particles was characterized by FT-IR, TGA and SEM analyses. |
