Azo-containing polymer materials are very widely used in the fields of optical switching, liquid crystal displays, optical data storage media for digital data, and so on. A series of novel liquid crystal hard-hard diblock copolymers (BCs) containing azobenzene moiety in the side-chain, with different content ratios of the LC block, was successfully synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in anisole solution with macro-chain transfer agent (PCAEMA-CTA) and new crystalline acrylamide monomer in the presence of AIBN. Kinetic studies on the diblock copolymer system of the PCAEMA-CTA with the new monomer verified the controlled/living manner of RAFT. The chemical constitution and properties of the monomers and the designed BCs were determined by 1H NMR, DSC, UV, and GPC, respectively. Besides, the liquid crystalline properties and morphological structure were investigated by optical polarizing microscopy and AFM. |
