A series of transparent polyimide (PI)/clay nanocomposite films with various clay contents were prepared and their physical properties were investigated to understand their possible use as substrate for flexible displays. The morphological, optical, thermal, mechanical and barrier properties of the PI/clay nanocomposite films were interpreted as a function of clay content. The thermal stability, mechanical and barrier properties of the nanocomposite films, which were strongly dependent upon their chemical and morphological structure, were enhanced as the clay content increased. However, the optical transmittance of the nanocomposite films decreased due to high molecular packing order with increasing clay content. The enhanced thermal, mechanical and barrier properties of the PI/clay nanocomposite films indicated that these materials are potentially suitable for flexible display applications. |
