Lecithins, silanes, or nano-materials have been introduced into the host nematic (N) liquid crystal (LC) media for the automatic vertical alignment (VA) of LC, but these nano-materials create several problems such as aggregation with themselves, poor compatibility and interaction with host LCs. To overcome these drawbacks, a photo-polymerizable itaconic acid-based amphiphile (abbreviated as Ita3C12) is designed and synthesized for the automatic formation of VA. Ita3C12-based VA was stabilized by the photo-polymerization with methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MAPOSS) cross-linkers. The photo-polymerized Ita3C12-based VA layer showed the strong surface anchoring energy without generating any light scattering.
