Polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC)membranes are one of the widely used reverse osmosis membranes. However, they arevulnerable to organic- and bio-fouling. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are knownthat could improve the permeability and physical properties of the membrane. Herein, functionalized CNC (f-CNC) was synthesized by grafting 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP)group to CNCs to improve antibacterial property and dispersion stability in organicsolvents. Then, thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were fabricated by incorporatingf-CNC as a nanofiller of organic phase during interfacial polymerization. The purewater flux of TFN with f-CNC of 0.02 wt% was increased by 44% without sacrificingNaCl rejection. Also, it showed enhanced organic fouling resistance and bactericidalactivities about ~90%. |
