Despite continued effort, there is a still need for a novel and efficient strategy to detect nerve agents which are a class of phosphorous-containing organic chemicals. Here, we present simple-to-fabricate chemiresistive nerve agent sensors based on polypyrrole nanotubes. The polypyrrole nanotubes were modified with functional side groups to make them chemically specific to a target species, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP). DMMP is a simulant of nerve agent sarin. It was found that the introduction of carboxylic groups on the surface of PPy nanotubes resulted in enhanced sensitivity to DMMP via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the nanotubes depended on the degree of the carboxylic group introduced. |
