The crystallization behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol)/graphene discs (PVA/GDs) nanocomposite was investigated in terms of the heterogeneous nucleation effect of GDs using FTIR and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). GDs were prepared via transversal cutting of carbon nanofibers. A polymer nanocomposite with uniform dispersity could be readily obtained due to the enhanced compatibility in aqueous solution. The degree of crystallinity of PVA/GDs nanocomposite increased up to 18.8 % at the GDs concentration of 0.5 wt%, compared to the pristine PVA. The GDs acted as an effective nucleating agent during the crystallization process, thereby enhancing the degree and rate of crystallization. In addition, the kinetic study of the crystallization also revealed the decreased value of the Avrami coefficient in the case of the PVA/GDs nanocomposite. |
