Introduction of cationic nickel and palladium systems having Ziegler-Natta type mechanism have changed the scenario of academic research in olefin polymerization/oligomerization catalysis and hence, late transition metal complexes has brought in to focus as a new class of catalysts. Cationic nickel systems are relatively more electrophilic and are more sensitive to protic solvents and comonomer functional groups than that of palladium. In order to solve this problem, Grubbs and coworkers introduced a new class of catalysts having neutral Ni(II) metal center catalysts with a “harder” nitrogen based ligand. Based on this, in the current work a new ligand system which can be tunable to mono, bi or trinuclear systems according to the metallation conditions, keeping the salicylaldine scaffold intact, has introduced. The nickel catalysts produced were having very high activity towards ethylene oligomerization giving hexane and butene as the main product |
