High refractive index materials have been developed for the practical applications such as optical waveguide, optical lens and eyeglasses, AR coating, etc. Most organic optical materials require high optical transparency, optical and thermal stability and film-processability. Low birefringent and flexibiliy are additional essential property depending on applications. New sulfur-attached polymers for a high refractive index of more than 1.65(nD) are prepared using dithianes and dithiolanes. The refractive index correlates with a sulfur content in sulfur-attached polyacrylates. The cyclic structure minimizes a molar volume and contributes partially to the increment of refractive index. Chemical oxidation transforms sulfur group to sulfoxide or sulfone groups, which results in the decrement of refractive index. The refractive index can be tuned by the extent of oxidation of sulfur-attached polymer materials. |
