In this study, we introduce a simple and robust strategy for bonding two heterogeneous substrates as a means to fabricate a closed microfluidic system. Conventional methods employed for plastic bonding generally involve temperature which is almost equal to or slightly higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg), as well as high pressure conditions. Although highly stable bond can be achieved, channel deformation can take place, greatly reducing the channel resolution. In our previous study, we have introduced the strategy to realize anti-adhesion coating of nanopatterned mold adopting a thin layer PDMS on the surface. In this study, we apply this strategy for achieving permanent bonding of plastics. Using this method, we could successfully bond poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) substrates as well as plastic and PDMS, preserving the channel structure in high resolution. Various surface characterizations were performed and bonding strengths were evaluated. |
