Alginate hydrogels have been widely used as injectable matrices for various biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and easy fabrication via ionic interaction. However, it is still challenging to improve their bioactivity owing to the inherent bio-inert properties of alginate. Hyperbaric oxygen (O2) has been demonstrated to facilitate the wound healing processes via acute oxidative stress. Herein, we present O2-generating alginate (OGA) hydrogels formed by a calcium peroxide-mediated cross-linking reaction for the wound treatment. The OGA hydrogels rapidly generate O2 up to hyperbaric levels (over 81% pO2) in vitro and in vivo, expediting the wound healing in the mouse skin defect models. In sum, our hydrogels have great potential as bioactive acellular matrices for the wound management. |
