Development of cross-linked proton exchange membranes prepared by thiol-ene click reaction for fuel cell application |

Cross-linked sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (C-SPAES) were fabricated by thiol-ene click reaction between thiol group capped SPAES (SH-SPAES) and vinyl polysulfone (VPSf). The C-SPAES membranes exhibit remarkably enhanced physical and chemical stabilities compared with pristine SPAES. The electrochemical properties of C-SPAES membranes were also studied. Although the proton conductivity value of pristine SPAES with high degree of sulfonation (DS) (67 mol%) was not estimated because of the low physical stability of the membrane in humidified condition at 80 oC, those values of the C-SPAES membranes could be obtained due to the improved physical stabilities and the estimated values were larger than that of the pristine SPAES with the DS of 50 mol%. Moreover, the cell performance of C-SPAES membrane which exhibits optimized physicochemical properties shows larger maximum power density (692 mW cm-2) than that of Nafion 212 at 80 oC in 100% RH and air condition. |
