Physical Properties of Polyurethane and Waterborne Polyurethane as Antifouling Paint Resins |

Antifouling paints have been used to prevent marine organisms from attaching them to the ship hulls which makes the ship spend more fuel on plying by increasing weight of ship hulls. There are many types of antifouling paints. Among them, we had studied traditional acrylic copolymer types which can be self-polished in sea water. And we have studied polyurethane(PU) and waterborne polyurethane(WPU) resins which are considered to be applied as a new antifouling paint matrix. In this study, PU and WPU resins were synthesized by polyethylene glycol(PEG), poly(tetramethylene adipate) glycol(PTAd), 4,4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), 2,2’-bis(hydroxyl methyl)-propionic acid(DMPA), 1,4-butanediol and various quaternary ammonium salts(QAS). And the physical self-polishing properties of PU and WPU resins were tested by the measurement of reduced film thickness in sea water. |
