The pre-treatment of aluminium sheets prior to adhesive bonding with an epoxy is an essential step in many industrial applications. However, the conventional pre-treatments often comprise a range of chemicals such as solvents and chromates, which can no longer be used for environmental reasons. The plasma deposition of thin coatings on aluminium, which exhibit strong interfacial bonding, could be an alternative to the traditional chemical treatments. In the present work, aluminium substrates were treated with plasma, and the adhesive joint performance and failure modes of plasma-coated aluminium substrates were investigated. The plasma treatment was carried out in a capacitively coupled RF plasma reactor. Epoxy primer was then applied to the plasma treated aluminium substrates, and the adhesive joints were characterized by the ASTM D.1002-53 T. |
