Poly(L-Lactide) (PLA) was synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of L-Lactide (LA) with benzyl alcohol as an initiator and double metal cyanide (DMC) as a catalyst. The ROP was carried out by changing the amounts of catalyst on L-Lactide, different reaction temperatures and various DMC catalysts included different complexing agents such as 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone (DMC-E01), 2-ethoxyethyl acetate (EEA), ethylene glycol diacetate (EGD), 2-methoxyethyl acetate (MEA), diethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate (DGEEA), 2-butoxyethyl acetate (BEA). The all synthesized polymers of targeted molecular weight (MW) ranged in between MW-8100 and MW-19,600. The physical properties of resulting poly(L-Lactide) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. |
