Preparation and characterization of ion exchange beads using SMS-co-PEGDA copolymer |

The copolymer bead (SMS-co-PEGDA) was synthesized by suspension polymerization based on sodium methallyl sulfonate (SMS) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). The chemical structures of the microsphere were characterized by FT-IR analysis. The broad band occurring at around 3400 cm-1 can be ascribed to hydrogen bonding and OH single vibration peak from SO3H group of SMS. The band at 1250-1150 cm-1 attributed to stretching vibration for S=O, and the band at 1060-1030 cm-1 is assigned to the symmetrical O=S=O band because of the stretching vibrations of the sulfonic group of SMS. The basic properties of microsphere such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC) were measured. The IEC value increased with increasing SMS mole ratio due to ionic group (-SO3H). The surface morphology obtained by SEM showed the pore and sphere approximately. |
