Layer by Layer self-assembly (LbL) method is a very useful way to make a polymeric thin film by using electrostatic attraction, and a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) can be prepared by using the LbL method. In this research, a polystyrene copolymer containing quaternary ammonium salt was prepared by copolymerization of styrene and vinylbenzyl chloride and quaternization of the resultant copolymer with trimethylamine. The copolymer was also modified by incorporating azide (-N3) moiety for crosslinking reaction. Therefore, LbL method was used for the preparation of fuel cell film by using the azide modified cationic polystyrene copolymer (amPS) as a cationic polyelectrolyte and sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (sPPO) as an anionic polyelectrolyte, on the Nafion film. Obtained film was characterized by H-NMR, IR, IEC, water uptake, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability. Pristine Nafion™ was used as a reference. |
